Cost of burials rockets in Kirkintilloch and Bishopbriggs

BURIAL and cremation fees in East Dunbartonshire are among the highest in Scotland, a trade union has revealed.

The GMB union said the charges by councils in Scotland will be “a real shock to many”.

Edinburgh and Glasgow top the GMB list with councils charging around £2,000 for internment fees and burial rites and almost £1,500 for cremation.

East Dunbartonshire comes in fourth with burial fees of £1,811 and cremations costing around £900.

The only other area to charge more is South Lanarkshire with burial fees of £1,833 and cremation at £1,225.

GMB Scotland secretary Harry Donaldson said: “The total average cost once funeral director’s costs and the reception are added comes to £7,000.

“Someone is making a lot of money out of bereavement.”
