Plans to make it easier for cyclists to move around the city were approved by the executive committee on Thursday.

The funding - £897,000 from Transport Scotland’s Cycling Walking & Safer Streets (CWSS) and £280,000 from Sustrans - will allow for a a key commuter route between the southside and city centre, and the design and contruction of the NCN 7 - Cardonald route.

A route through from Pollokshaws through Tradeston to the city centre is estimated for completion by August this year, thanks to the Sustrans cash.

The NCN 7 will also offer bike riders a designated route from Pollok to the new South Glasgow Hospitals campus.

The project is tied into GCC’s Strategic Plan for Cycling 2015-2025, recently put to consultation and aimed at increasing the number of cyclists on the road, whether it’s for leisure, transport or sport.

Councillor Alistair Watson, executive member for sustainability and transport, said: “We are making real progress in promoting and establishing cycling as a healthy and sustainable form of transport.
