Aged between 17 and 21, the lucky 12 were selected from 122 applicants who applied for the two year programme of training, work experience and studying.

Council leader Rhondda Geekie greeted the new recruits, who will study for an SVQ while working in business administration, customer services, IT and horticulture.

Councillor Geekie said: “It is right that the council does what it can to be a part of the national Modern Apprenticeship Programme, and I’m delighted that we are welcoming 12 enthusiastic, bright and ambitious young people to our team.

“They will be given support, help and advice over the next two years and I urge them to grasp every opportunity towards building a career for themselves.”

She added: “The standard of applications for the apprenticeship programme was extremely high and I’d like to congratulate the successful candidates in making it through the selection process.

“We have an excellent track record with apprenticeships, with five of our last six apprentices securing positions within the council.
