Council road repairs a patch-up job?

SOUTHSIDE streets are set for resurfacing as part of the latest rollout of Glasgow city council’s 2013/14 roads investment programme.

The programme is part of a £30 million investment over two years. According to a GCC spokesman, roads are given priority following network inspections assessing condition, safety and how busy the area is, as well as notes from local area committees and elected members.

The latest roads to be resurfaced include Springkell Avenue, Maxwell Drive, Kilbirnie Street, Sherbrooke Avenue, and Titwood and Shawmoss roads. Patch repairs will be rolled out to Dolphin, Haggs and Dumbreck roads, Terregles and Hamilton avenues, Glencairn, Dalziel and Newark drives, Maxwell Road, Kenmure and Melville streets and Beaton Road.

Streets not included this year will be put forward for next year’s programme.

Pollokshields councillor David Meikle welcomes the investment, but expresses disappointment over temporary repairs.

He told The Extra: “It’s disappointing that roads in a very poor state are not included. I have contacted the council about the condition of Dolphin Road, but it’s not being resurfaced — only patched.

“I trust the work will begin soon as Dolphin Road and others badly need it. My constituents rightly expect local roads to be resurfaced soon.”

The condition of Dolphin Road prompted similar responses from Twitter followers, with @ntrainor commenting that the residential street is “still awful”. Gary Kilpatrick added that the repair will “turn to chuckies in a few months”.
