Councillors reject shopping development in Kilsyth

A application to demolish the old police station on Parkfoot Road and build a retail unit that would house three businesses was lodged with North Lanarkshire Council’s planning department.

But at a meeting of North Lanarkshire Council’s planning and transportation committee in Motherwell’s Civic Centre today (Thursday), the proposal was rejected by councillors.

Three businesses including Greggs, Tesco and Iceland were expected to move in, creating an estimated 50 jobs. The news that the proposal was rejected was welcomed by members of Kilsyth Community Council and local councillors Jean Jones, Heather McVey and Alan Stevenson, who were all at the meeting.

They fought against the plans because they believed they would contribute to the demise of the town’s Main Street.

Kilsyth Community Council welcomed the idea of the businesses to the town but they felt that they were more suited to empty units in the Main Street.
