Abronhill football pitch incident leads to driver’s arrest after police chase

Police have confirmed that there has been another incident at football pitches in Abronhill -which has led to an arrest.

Last week we revealed how North Lanarkshire Council issued a stay away warning in regard to this and other football pitches - as crowds gathered there, breaching guidelines on social distancing.

Yet the latest incident would seem to be in a class of its own after a 25-year old motorist allegedly ran amok in a 7am high speed spree on Sunday, May 17.

His conduct- which was observed by a number of horrified eyewitnesses- prompted a police chase and arrest on a string of different motoring offences.

The man also struggled with officers in their quest to detain him once they had caught up with his car.

Communities Inspector Neil MacLeod explained: “Police received reports of a vehicle being driven erratically on and off road near to the ash pitch near Oak Road.

“Officers responded immediately at which the car drove off at speed.

“A brief vehicle pursuit ensured.

“He was charged with dangerous driving and was found to be over the prescribed limit of alcohol.

“The male was also charged with resisting arrest. He has been charged too for driving without vehicle insurance.”

A report on this incident has been sent to the procurator fiscal in Airdrie.
