Cumbernauld police commended for swift action against armed man in violent incident

Cumbernauld Police have confirmed that they have arrested a 30-year old man who assaulted members of the public and a female officer on Monday (November 9)

The highly charged incident kicked off around 9.30pm after the male was seen acting in a disorderly and aggressive manner while making his way from Kildrum’s Ellisland Road to Glenhove Road in Carbrain.

Officers received multiple reports from eyewitnesses about his conduct en route - and it is alleged that he assaulted three members of the public while in possession of a knife.

Thankfully not one of the victims was seriously injured but the incident escalated when police rushed to the scene. The man allegedly assaulted a policewoman by pushing her to the ground, causing her to strike her head on the ground. Additional officers were summoned and the male was arrested.

He has been charged with numerous crimes in including assaults on the public and a police officer plus the possession of an offensive weapon.

Communities Inspector Neil MacLeod said: “Although the police officer who was assaulted suffered concussion and was unable to continue her duties it is recognised that this incident could have resulted in far more serious consequences.

“The swift and brave actions of all officers who attended is to be commended and sadly highlights once again how common place assault on police officers has become whilst they endeavour to carry out their duties,”
