Ex-doctor gets 12 years in jail

A former accident and emergency consultant caught with a stash of lethal weapons in his Condorrat home has been jailed for 12 years.

Martin Watt (62), who left Monklands General Hospital in 2012 after 32 years of service, following disciplinary hearings, was convicted of intent to endanger life at Glasgow High Court last month.

Following a tip off police searched his home in Maree Drive last May and found three Skorpion sub-machine guns, two Valtro pistols and 1500 cartridges along with his “bad guys” list.

This was his list of former colleagues he blamed for his dismissal from the hospital, along with information on individuals addresses and car registrations.

Watt carried out shooting practice with a Skorpion sub-machine gun at a forest area close to a motorway near his home.

In his defence Watt told the court he had “assessed how to assassinate” people on the list and “expressed my thoughts on paper”, but insisted he did not intend to kill anyone and was not a danger to the public.

However, this was rejected by a jury which took just 75 minutes to find him guilty.

Judge Lady Stacey handed down an extended sentence with 12 years in prison and a further three years of supervision.

In addition a Serious Crime Prevention Order was granted restricting his Internet use, travel and NHS visits for five years after his release from custody.
