Govanhill human trafficking gang jailed for more than 36 years

The Govanhill-based gang behind a human trafficking network have bene jailed for a total of over 36 years at the High Court in Edinburgh today (Friday).

Vojtech Gombar, 61, Ratislav Adam, 31, Jana Sandorova, 28, and Anil Wagle, 37, denied the charges of trafficking women and forcing them into prostitution, but were convicted at Glasgow’s High Court in October.

Officers first became aware of the trafficking and exploitation in 2014. After a three-year operation officers raided four flats in the Govanhill area, leading to the arrests.

Responding to the sentencing, Detective Superintendent Filippo Capaldi, Head of the Human Trafficking Unit, Police Scotland said: “Today’s sentencing is a vindication for those women who were victims of this criminal gang and of their bravery in telling us about their horrific experiences. It also serves as a warning to traffickers operating in Scotland: make no mistake, you are not welcome here.

“We will work with our partners nationally and internationally, and within our own local communities, to identify victims and to pursue the gangs who exploit and enslave people for financial gain, and bring them to justice.”
