Lanark Police in favour of extension to licensed premises at 2015 Lanimers

POLICE have revealed that they are in favour of setting up zones to allow locals to drink outside pubs at next year’s Lanimer Day celebrations.

The town by-law which allows drinking in Lanark’s streets on Lanimer Day is set to be scrapped for next year’s celebrations prompting fears of overcrowding from the public and publicans alike.

However, officers and publicans have discussed setting up of the zones which would be an extension to the licensed premises for a day.

Inspector Scott Jones, from Lanark Police, said: “Publicans had expressed concerns about loss of business and issues such as overcrowding but our position would be that we would fully support the setting up of these zones which would be an extension of licensed premises on Lanimer Day.

“These zoned-off areas at the front or rear of premises, with stewards, would allow people to stand and have a drink and allow law-abiding citizens to enjoy a drink in the sunshine.

“We have had a healthy dialogue with the publicans in Lanark who can see our side of the argument and we are doing everything we can to work with the publicans on this issue.”
