Lanarkshire-wide warning of fake notes scam in phone sale

Police have warned that a sale transaction of a valuable item could go badly wrong - after Lanarkshire-wide reports of a scam came back to them.

The racket involves those who have opted to sell an iPhone on Facebook’s buyers and sellers site Marketplace – because the devices are being paid for with fake banknotes.

Those who snap up the phones have left unsuspecting sellers out of pocket while still being able to profit from the high-end phone they netted in a con.

A police spokesperson said that the conduct of the seller had a big part to play in avoiding being fleeced.

This first involves checking if the buyer’s profile looks legitimate.

He added: “If you decide to meet a buyer – try not to go alone, or tell someone where you will be and meet in a public place.

“If you decide to go ahead with the sale, check cash for signs of fraud.

“Fake banknotes will often have similar serial numbers, poor printing or different sizes.

“If in doubt, don’t sell!”

Anyone who has fallen victim to the scam or has more information about it is asked to contact police on 101.
