Man guilty of Surjit Singh Chhokar murder

A man faces a life sentence after he was convicted of the 1998 murder of an Indian waiter.

A jury at the High Court in Glasgow has today found Ronnie Coulter guilty of killing Surjit Singh Chhokar (32) in Overtown, Wishaw.

Coulter (48), of Wishaw, had blamed his nephew Andrew Coulter and Motherwell man David Montgomery for the murder.

All three had been cleared of killing Mr Chhokar after two separate trials in 1999 and 2000.

The Crown was given permission to try Ronnie Coulter again following changes to Scotland’s double jeopardy laws.

After the verdict the judge, Lord Matthews, deferred sentence on Coulter until later this month.

The trial heard the Coulters and Montgomery went to see Mr Chhokar following a row over a £100 Giro cheque stolen from the waiter’s home.

After an argument Mr Chhokar was stabbed three times in the chest and one of the blows pierced his heart, resulting in his death from massive blood loss.
