24-year-old Craig was found lying in the road at Lochranza Drive in the Lindsayfield area of the town, a short distance from his girlfriend, Olivia Geraghty’s home.

The former St Luke’s High School pupil was treated at the scene by first aiders initially while paramedics who arrived immediately battled to save his life.

Witnesses claim that the amateur footballer – who played for AFC Bonnyholm in Pollok – had suffered catastrophic head injuries.

A Crown Office spokesman said: “The procurator fiscal received a report concerning a 46-year-old male in connection with an alleged incident in East Kilbride on Sunday, March 5.

The statement continued: “After full and careful consideration of the facts and circumstances of the case, he was liberated from custody pending further inquiries and did not appear in court.”
