Crookfur kids grab environmental awards

As reported in The Extra, the youngsters spent last St Andrews Day volunteering at the school, creating a willow dome and tunnel, and digging out a wild flower meadow.

The woodland area now also includes a fire pit with seating, a tree stump circle, stepping stones and woodchip paths.

The John Muir award is an environmental accolade encouraging people of all ages and backgrounds to connect and care for wild spaces, and involves four challenges; discovering a wild place, exploring it, conserving it and sharing the experience with others.

Head teacher Fiona Loudon was delighted to hand out the awards to 51 pupils and three staff members last week, as few schools manage to achieve them.

She told The Extra: “The school community has had an amazing time working towards this award and it has inspired us to continue to explore the outdoors and incorporate it into our learning at school.”
