Cumbernauld archeological dig ‘unlikely to be a success’

AMBITIOUS community proposals to excavate a medieval site in Cumbernauld flagged up in the News and Chronicle are doomed to failure according to a locally-based expert- who has first hand-experience of an unsuccesful dig.

We revealed that the Friends of Cumbernauld House Park wanted to unearth the area surrounding Cumbernauld Castle and the matter was actively discussed at a meeting of the group last week.

However, one of Scotland’s leading architectural historians, John Kirkhope of Balloch, believes that the castle was so thoroughly demolished that the only trace of the once-opulent site would be ceramic mortar stains.
