Adam Smith of Cumbernauld Environmental Society said “This is a fantastic project and we’re delighted to see it progress to the next stage. With so many local organisations working together, and with plans to involve all local schools in the development, this is hopefully one project which will serve to further strengthen community links and civic pride throughout the town”.

The garden is intended to commemorate all those from Cumbernauld who died in military service from 1914 onwards. It is hoped that the project will be largely completed by July 28, in time for the centenary of the start of the First World War.

The former Greenfaulds Orchard was the preferred site for this project, with its various assets including good accessibility, an existing car park and a south-facing environment. The plans were developed following a series of public meetings and discussions with stakeholders including local government representatives. Various local organisations will help create the park, including air and army cadets, Cumbernauld Rotary Club and the Royal British Legion.

Members of the public who would like to learn more are welcome to attend Cumbernauld Community Forum’s next meeting, being held on Tuesday, January 14 in Cumbernauld College at 7pm.
