Cumbernauld station bridge too far for passengers

Passengers have slammed rail bosses after the removal of a bridge has reduced key access to the platform.

Cumbernauld Commuters Association has been inundated with complaints from rail users who are facing a several minute detour to board key services to Glasgow and Motherwell.

They must access the replacement to the historic Bell’s Bridge after renovations were made to the station.

And the adjoining path too leaves a lot to be desired, according to a growing number of passengers.

Many users who have arrived in reasonably good time for their journey say that they have found themselves stranded up for periods of up to an hour after missing their train.

The situation is made all the worse as Network Rail says it has no plans to replace the bridge.

Andrew Stephen of Cumbernauld Commuters Association said he had been inundated with complaints about the set-up, which has come about as the result of the electrification process.

The Abronhill man said: “It is more than inconvenient and is, quite frankly, a disincentive to travel.

What’s-more, the ramp as well as the path on the other side are well past their sell-by dates, being worn, unevenly pot-holed It is quite dangerous - especially in wet or icy conditions - and are now not fit for purpose,” he added.

We invited Network Rail to respond to these points, but a spokesman would only say: “There will be a new access created off the newly installed footbridge immediately to the west of the new modular building.

“This will be installed in May or June to coincide with the new station building works.”
