Cumbernauld’s One Stop Shop will close due to cost cutting

Cutbacks by North Lanarkshire Council will result in another shutdown within the older part of Cumbernauld Centre.

It’s been confirmed that Cumbernauld’s busy One Stop Shop in Forth Walk is to close next month.

The council intends to move this key amenity to another location.

It’s likely that existing council premises within nearby Fleming House will be converted to accommodate it.

The office block which faces the Tryst Centre already accomodates NLC’s planning and environment department and trading standards office.

Locals have paid their council tax and addressed queries regarding council services at the location which opened several years ago. The modern facility had replaced a smaller office just metres away which has lain empty since.

A council spokesman confirmed: “The Cumbernauld First Stop Shop will be moving premises in May,

“This is in line with our savings strategy to utilise council-owned property, rather than privately-leased accommodation.

“The date of the move, to Fleming House in the town centre, has still to be confirmed.

“However, we shall be publicising the change closer to the time,’’ he said.

The council is trying to claw back savings of £62.4 million over a three year period to balance its books.

This marks the latest cost-cutting blow to this part of the centre after we reported that its near neighbour, Cumbernauld Post Office could also be on the move.

Plans are afoot to move the facility to within a shop. The Post Office has claimed that this amenity has been running at a loss.
