Cycle festival will be a wheely good day out

Organised by Good Moves Bishopbriggs, with support from East Dunbartonshire Council, the event kicks off at 11am this Sunday (June 15).

There will be a variety of attractions for cyclists including The AirBag cycle skills course, a Timber Trail and a cycle stunts show by the Clan at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

There will also be live music and races for primary school pupils, along with face-painting and bouncy castles.

Organisers have even arranged for Fairtrade stalls, a bike recycling point and a sample of Commonwealth Games activities.

Councillor Alan Moir, convener of development and regeneration, sees the festival as an integral part of the council’s commitment to improving health and wellbeing.

He said: “Promoting cycling and sustainable transport — as well as increasing physical activity, improving health and access to sport — is a priority for the council and officers will be there on the day to chat with visitors about other active travel activities. We are delighted to again support the Cycle Fair and hope, as in previous years, it is a wonderful success.

“As well as fun for all the family there’s the opportunity to find out more about cycling safety and maintenance.

He added: “I’m also pleased to say that again there’s a strong Fairtrade theme, which dovetails nicely with the theme of cycling and sustainable transport.

“There is also the chance to try Commonwealth Games sports and get more active, which ties in with the 2014 Legacy programme.

“I wish the event organisers every success.”

Good Moves Bishopbriggs is administered by the East Dunbartonshire Cycle Co-op — a community social enterprise which aims to promote cycling among children and adults.

Sunday’s event, which begins at 11am, will be opened by Provost Una Walker.
