Defibrillator is set to be a first for Milngavie Precinct

Milngavie is getting its first defibrillator for members of the public to use - thanks to funds raised by the local Boys Brigade.

1st/2nd Milngavie Company raised £744 by doing bag packing at Tesco supermarket in Milngavie.

Tesco donated £200 and Milngavie Community Council also donated £500 towards the purchase.

The unit was purchased in March but it’s taken a while to find a suitable location within the town centre.

Thanks to the generosity of Marks and Spencer, particularly the store manager Andrew Steele, the defibrillator has now been placed on the shop’s white wall facing the playpark in a weatherproof cabinet.

Marks and Spencer are going to supply the location and the electricity supply to the cabinet to keep the unit at a temperature where it will be ready for use all year round - even in the middle of a Scottish winter.

The defibrillator will be available to the whole community and can be accessed and operated by anyone without any prior training.

It is fully automated with voice prompts.

A launch event is going to be held this Saturday, August 27, at 3pm in the precinct (if the weather’s bad it will be held in The Fraser Centre) to raise awareness about the defibrillator, and to promote confidence in its use.

Boys Brigade parent Karen Rodgers said: “We will use a defibrillator unit and training models at the launch event and will be encouraging everyone to have a go and see how easy it is to save a life.

“If weather permits we will be doing this in the precinct so that as many people as possible can try it for themselves.”

The Boys Brigade would like to express their thanks to Marks and Spencer (particularly Andrew Steele) and Tesco (particularly Iain Campbell), Milngavie Community Council, Stuart Anderson of Anderson Associates, Bearsden, Milngavie Community First Responders and the Scottish Ambulance Service for all their support as well as everyone who donated money in Tesco for bag packing.

1st/2nd Milngavie Boys’ Brigade has over 80 members ranging from Primary 2 to Secondary 6 from all over Milngavie and beyond.

The Anchor Boys and Junior Section meets on Monday nights, and the Company Section meet on Fridays, at St Lukes Church Hall, Milngavie.

Activities include football, dodgeball, gymnastics, arts and crafts, basketball, fitness training and badge work.
