Demolition go ahead for former council headquarters

One of Kirkintilloch’s landmark buildings could soon be reduced to rubble, after permission was granted to demolish it.

Tom Johnston House, the former home of East Dunbartonshire Council is up for sale, with planning permission granted earlier this year for a food store, petrol filling station and restaurant on the site.

Last week councillors approved plans to demolish the building. The council moved to its new home at Southbank Marina in August 2012.

Thomas Glen, director of development and regeneration confirmed: “At its meeting on June 25, the council decided to proceed with the demolition of Tom Johnston House following the completion of the tender process. The successful tender provider will now be notified.”
