Romance blossomed and they were married five years later on November 25 1955, in the EU Congregational Church, Carluke, with a reception in the Welfare Hall.

John was working as a coal miner and Mary a “motor omnibus instructress”. They lived in Kirkfieldbank, then returned to Carluke.
