Dim the lights for another Southside Film Festival

Festival organisers have launched a programme of events for October 8-11, taking in southside venues both likely and unexpected — and more than one trip down cinematic memory lane.

The opening reception takes place on Thursday, October 8 at The Glad Cafe, with local films up for screening and a talk on the Lost Cinemas of Glasgow exhibition, running at the same venue September 29 - October 26.

The southside connections continue from there, with a free screening of Putting Pants on Philip at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall (Friday) — a tribute to Stan Laurel, who went to school in Queen’s Park and lived in Mount Florida.

Friday’s offerings also include Madeleine — the 1950 film based on one of Glasgow’s most notorious murderers, Madeleine Smith — at Pollok House, and a screening of Finding Vivian Maier at Queen’s Park Camera Club.

On Saturday, Martin Scorcese’s Hugo gets an airing at Queen’s Park Church, and there’s a festival first with Making in the Movies — an afternoon of fashion and crafts — at Govanhill Baths, coinciding with another This Is Not a Craft Fair.

United We Will Swim...Again!, the story of Govanhill Baths, will be shown in The Steamie at the same time, introduced by filmmaker Fran Higson, as will That Sinking Feeling — the directorial debut of director Bill Forsyth (of Gregory’s Girl fame).

Sunday’s offerings range from film review workshops to a discussion on Scotland on Screen, as well as the Southside Filmmaker Screening and Award and Man with a Movie Camera, accompanied at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall by the famous Wurlitzer Organ.
