Don’t miss out on free insulation

Southsiders and East Ren householders may be missing out on free money-saving home improvements because they don’t know they are eligible for it.

Research by Scottish Gas revealed that only a quarter of Glasgow residents are aware that their home qualifies for free insulation.

The survey found that nearly half of Glaswegians — 47 per cent — assume free insulation is ony available to income householders or those on benefits, whereas almost 90 per cent of homes that need insulation will qualify for the free of charge improvements.

A spokeswoman for Scottish Gas said: “We’re working with the government to rollout loft insulation to homes across the UK. This could mean millions of people will miss out on average annual savings on their energy bills of up to £150 from free loft insulation and up to £145 with cavity wall insulation.”

Rental tenants may also miss out on getting the improvements their home is entitled to, as more than a quarter of those surveyed didn’t know rented properties are also eligible.

And householders don’t need to be a customer of Scottish Gas to get the benefit of free insulation.

Claire Miles, managing director of Scottish Gas New Energy said: “It’s easy to see why people may not realise their home is eligible because previous schemes mainly helped low income and vulnerable households.”
