Doors Open Day for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth's Open Doors Days are scheduled to take place next weekend (Saturday September 24 and Sunday 25) but the event is effectively under new management.

For North Lanarkshire Council pulled out of the Scotland-wide scheme, blaming budget cuts.

Now hard working volunteers from Cumbernauld Community Development Trust are in charge of the event.

They have organised access to the penthouse apartments in Cumbernauld town centre, Broadwood Stadium and the Stagecoach Depot.

Organiser Adam Smith said: “I’ve always hugely enjoyed taking part in this scheme in previous years but when I heard North Lanarkshire Council wasn’t taking part, I felt I had to put a programme together.

“There’s been a fantastic reaction from people who want to take part.’’

The Muirfield Centre will also feature in the scheme and this will neatly coincide with the historical exhibition taking place there on Saturday from noon to 4pm.

Exhibitors from Edinburgh University will showcase documentation and personal souvenirs from the early days of Cumbernauld.

This is the much-publicised event which will see a special archive created, showcasing photographs of the town from its infancy.

As we’ve reported, members of the public are being asked to come along with their own snaps which will then be digitalised and handed back to their owners.
