Dramatic win for the Players

A talented amateur dramatic group have been celebrating after they were crowned British champions at a national competition.

The Kirkintilloch Players took a team of more than 30 people from the club down to Bracknell, in England for the British Final of One Act Plays.

They were named British Champions after their presentation of the Torben Betts’ play, ‘Her Slightest Touch’.

Representing Scotland and competing against national winners from England, Wales and Northern Ireland, the two character play was judged to be the best in the competition by adjudicator Paul Fowler, winning the prestigious Howard de Walden Trophy.

Club president Keith Robinson, who was also in the play, said: “It was a truly amazing night winning the British Final for Scotland and Kirkintilloch.

“But we must give a big thank you to our fantastic supporters who created an electric atmosphere in the theatre and made it such a rewarding and enjoyable experience.”

Set in the flat of a prostitute, the play explores an encounter between the girl and her nervous client.

As the play continues, the audience find there is more to the pair than first meets the eye. Full of twists and sprinkled with humour throughout, the play was warmly received by the audience of the Wilde Theatre.

Under the direction of Gavin Paterson, the production was commended a for the touching portrayal of characters by Amy Angus and Keith Robinson, the set design, and the technical elements of the production, overseen by Gordon Allan.

One supporter with the English team commented that it was the most complete piece of theatre he’d ever seen.

With only a very small team directly involved in the play, the numbers were boosted by a collection of club members, patrons and family .

Some even flew from as far away as Dubai to support the Players.

Whilst the actors and production team were making their final preparations before the show, the travelling support managed to soak up some of the English summertime as well as cheering on Andy Murray at the quarter final round of Wimbledon - they take full credit for Murray’s win.
