The incident happened near the railway viaduct in a route that links the Broadwood area with Kilsyth, at around 11.40pm.

Heroic members of the public succeeded in removing the stricken driver, a 24-year-old male from Kilsyth, from his white Ford Fiesta, before the emergency services arrived at the scene.

Ambulance personnel took the man to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he is being treated for injuries which are not life-threatening.

However, it’s emerged that the incident was of equal interest to the police.

For it has been confirmed that the victim was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

Police also say that two offensive weapons were found in his car.
