Drivers told: don’t risk it

From December 5, the limit has been lowered from 80mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood to 50mg, in line with the rest of Europe — and the message from authorities is that the best approach is saying no to alcohol altogether before getting behind the wheel.

If not, Police Scotland has warned that an extra 35 drivers a week could lose their licence over the festive period.

Inspector Alan Dickson, of Giffnock police station, told The Extra: “Metabolisms are different and that makes it difficult to predict when you’re going over the new limit.

“Studies show you’re more likely to have an accident if you drink, even if under the limit — you are still three times more likely to die in a collision than without any alcohol at all.

“We would recommend that anyone going to Christmas parties or nights out plan how they’re getting home in advance; book a taxi, use public transport or have a designated driver.”

The East Ren cop also warns those heading out in the car after a heavy night, commenting: “Now more than ever, it’s essential to consider the potential of being over the limit the morning after.

“Officers recently stopped a man on Fenwick Road who was still two times over the current limit after drinking the night before.”

It’s a message reiterated by East Renfrewshire Council’s convener for health and social care, councillor Alan Lafferty, who said: “The best approach is to have no alcohol at all if you’re intending to get behind the wheel — alcohol at any level impairs driving.”
