Eaglesham fundraisers are praised in Parliament

The group celebrates its 25th anniversary year — and a combined total of £400,000 raised for those dealing with cancer.

Maire Jefferey, inaugural chair of the committee, explained: “An announcement was made in the Houses of Parliament by Kirsten Oswald, East Renfrewshire MP, who read an article in The Extra about the committee’s efforts over the years and decided to give a mention of this amazing effort.”

It’s another welcome boost for the group, which also held the bi-annual ladies lunch and fashion show last week.

Some 100 guests attended the event at the Eglinton Arms Hotel, with ladies from the committee modelling clothes from Eye Candy Fashion. Make up was donated by Clarins at House of Fraser, and hairdressing services provided by Rhona Cameron.

Current chair Eileen Morton said: “We raised more than £6,000 with the continuing patronage of our guests, many of whom are regular supporters who champion this most deserving of causes.

“To mark this special silver anniversary event, a bracelet — specifically designed by NoJo of London for the lunch — had its own raffle, which contributed very generously to the amount raised.

“We want to thank all the individuals and the many local businesses for donating an amazing array of raffle prizes.

“An event like this could not take place without the support of our main sponsor, the Best Western Eglinton Arms, and others including Forth Wines and I&D Cant.”

Emma Connor, Macmillan fundraising manager for Glasgow South, added: “We are sincerely indebted to the ongoing work of the Eaglesham Committee — it’s quite inspiring to see such a small group continuously giving that commitment over so many years.”
