East Ren’s housing stock set to go up

East Ren Council has unveiled its homes masterplan for the next five years — with plans for 207 new houses comprising of social rent and shared equity properties — to be submitted to the Scottish Government for confirmation early next year.

The council will also buy 10 one bedroom homes from private owners, to address the current shortage and demand.

The £10.4m investment is a joint effort by the council, housing associations, the Scottish Government’s affordable housing supply programme and private developers.

Councillor Danny Devlin, convener for housing, said: “Every part of East Renfrewshire, from Neilston to Eaglesham, will see new bright, modern social rent homes built.

“We need more affordable housing and that’s exactly what we’ll be setting out to deliver.

“These are bold proposals to create the type of housing that residents want and deserve.”

The plan includes seven council houses for Polnoon Street, Eaglesham, which will be ready for tenants by next year.

New homes are planned for Barrhead South, Maidenhill and Newton Mearns where development has already been proposed, as well as further target areas Ayr Road and Barcapel, Barrhead North, Darnley Road and Neilston.
