Campaigners have called on East Renfrewshire Council and Leisure Trust to come clean about the likelihood of there still being a viable swimming pool at Eastwood Park in ten years’ time.

A recent Facebook campaign attracted nearly 1,000 members within the first 12 hours. Savio D’Souza, pool campaigner and independent candidate in Giffnock and Thornliebank, said: “I’m grateful to the Extra for recently highlighting this issue which resulted in a commitment.

“The pool has not been maintained to the best standard and I believe that there are additional costs involved to keep it open. The suggestion that a new swimming pool would be built is totally unrealistic as there is no land indentified as suitable and the projected cost of £20 million upward is not affordable by the council.”

An East Renfrewshire Council spokesman said: “Eastwood Park Leisure is an important asset which has served the community for more than 40 years. We will work with East Renfrewshire Culture and Leisure Trust, which operates the facility, to consider the best way forward before presenting any proposals to full council for their consideration.”
