Eastwood traffic worries

Construction on the new Eastwood Health and Care Centre is moving fast — but some have voiced concerns over getting to and from the Williamwood site.

Responding to additional bus routes bound for the New South Glasgow Hospital, Twitter follower Tom Aitken said: “What about Williamwood? Similar problem.” @AidsRegs added that with the new centre situated next to Williamwood Medical Centre, “traffic chaos is inevitable”.

Councillor Gordon McCaskill has voiced concerns over resident access while Drumby Crescent remains closed — until November — as well as future travel arrangements to the £15 million facility.

The opposition leader told The Extra: “I would anticipate complaints arriving when the new health centre opens and four other surgeries cease to operate. In my view, we need to have public transport arrangements in place before that happens.”

An East Renfrewshire Council spokeswoman responded: “Eastwood Health Centre will have 300 parking spaces and is close to Williamwood rail station.

“We have been carrying out a travel survey with patients whose services will be moving and will be sharing the results with SPT.”

The new centre — housing GP practices and social services — is due for completition in spring 2016.
