Educating a children’s champion

GLASGOW’S vulnerable children may find new champions in their midst after adults take a course in child protection.

Children’s charity, the NSPCC, is running a half day child protection course in Glasgow this month for anyone who works or volunteers with children.

The half day introductory course is designed to help adults to recognise the signs and indicators of child abuse and neglect, identify the legislation and guidance that provide the framework for protecting children and ensure people know what to do if you have concerns about a child.

Fiona Stevenson, NSPCC Scotland’s Child Protection Training Consultant, runs the course. She said: “With recent high profile celebrity cases hitting the headlines, people are more aware of child abuse than ever before. But with the majority of child abuse being perpetrated by family or friends it is vitally important that everyone who comes into contact with children look out for their wellbeing and that if they have a concern they act on it straight away.

“Many adults who work or volunteer with children tell us they aren’t sure what to do if they have concerns about a child’s safety or wellbeing. Our half day introduction to child protection course can give you the knowledge to recognise potential abuse and the confidence to act if you are worried about a child in your care.”

The course takes place on October 28, at Rowan Park Business Centre, between 9.45am-1.15pm.
