Elaine makes a splash for Giffnock South

Giffnock South Parish Church is £1,500 closer to repairing its roof, thanks to keen amateur swimmer Elaine Clarke.

As reported in The Extra, Elaine was tackling a 1.3 mile swim from the Holy Isle to Lamlash Pier in the Lamlash Splash on Saturday.

Her efforts were to raise funds for the renovation of the church, with planned improvements coming in at more than £500,000.

Elaine braved the jellyfish-infested waters nine years ago — but it wasn’t enough to put her off course.

Days after completing the challenge, she told The Extra: “I’m very tired. The current was strong, so I ended up doing a bit extra too - the scenic route!”

Elaine estimates that £1,500 has been raised so far — with £200 collected at give.net/giffnocksouth.

Now, she and fellow fundraisers are looking forward to charity events on dry land — kicking off with a luxury auction on Saturday, October 24.

The church is appealing for donations of unwanted jewellery, ornaments or paintings for an auction starting at 2pm — catalogues £3.

A quiz night with quizmaster Scott Cuthbertson will follow on Saturday, November 21 — tickets £6 BYOB.

Elaine added: “We hope the community will come along and support these events.

“We’re also looking for businesses to sponsor the quiz rounds and raffle prizes, so if you think you can help in any way, with either event, please contact me at [email protected].

Cash and cheque donations can also be handed in to the church office, or posted to Giffnock South Parish Church, 2 Greenhill Avenue, Giffnock, G46 6QX.
