Employees of some stores within the centre contacted The Extra to complain, with one, who did not wish to be identified, claiming the changes would cost her £390 per year.

There are three car parks at the Avenue, however the plans is only to start charging for the long-term parking option in an attempt to control the number of commuters who use it.

A spokesperson for the centre said: “The Avenue’s car parks have seen an investment of £500,000 over the past six months. These renovations have included re-surfacing and signage throughout both the ASDA and M&S car parks and included the long stay car park which is predominantly used by staff from the centre.

“The programme of works had been requested by customers and have been delivered to ensure a safe and secure customer experience.

“A £1.50 per day charge will be introduced to the long stay car park only and will not apply to the other car parks which will continue to remain free to use.”
