A total of seven families who have been living in refugee camps in the Middle East will call Cumbernauld home as from tomorrow (Thursday).

Local volunteers plus staff from the UK Government and North Lanarkshire Council will be on hand to welcome them and take them to the housing that has been allocated for them in the town.

Preparations were being finalised for the arrival of the refugees – and the group CumbernauldKilsythCares (pictured) will be handing out welcome packs to the new arrivals.

The local effort has been praised by MP Stuart McDonald. He said: “It is absolutely fantastic that Cumbernauld is playing its part to support people who have been forced to flee their homes by the violence and horror of the war in Syria.

“Having donated generously to refugees located abroad, the people of Cumbernauld will now welcome vulnerable Syrian families – that is a wonderful humanitarian gesture.

“I know that meetings between local officials and local volunteers have been really positive and productive.

“Everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen deserves enormous credit.

“I know that Cumbernauld residents are ready to provide the new arrivals with a warm welcome and the support they need to help rebuild their lives.”
