ER road repairs not running smoothly?

Councillor Ian McAlpine has received complaints from residents on the state of the streets — in particular Alloway Drive, King’s Drive and King’s Gardens.

A letter from the Newton Mearns South councillor, published in The Extra last week, states: “I have been contacted by residents who have seen more potholes develop over Christmas because of poor weather.

“I will be asking East Renfrewshire Council’s roads department to inspect these areas, and I will be keen to see improvements in the immediate future, as they are now in a very poor state of repair.”

In October, West of Scotland MSP Jackson Carlaw accused the council of failing to use its full government budget for road repairs — although an ERC spokesman countered that the figures obtained by the MSP related to an “overall road budget”, adding: “The actual figures for 2013/14 for potholes were budget: £590,000 and spent: £606,000.”

This week, readers took to Facebook to share their pothole hotspots, including Laura Christie who said: “Lots of holes in the road at Castleton Drive, Newton Mearns, at one half of the street.”

Lesley W Brown added: “We’ve had potholes on Kirkhill Road for years. When they do get round to ‘fixing’ them, they just fill them up and before you know it they’re back.”

On roads spending for this year, an ERC spokeswoman responded: “We have not received our budget for the next year so we cannot comment on our possible works programme of resurfacing schemes.
