An application for planning permission has been lodged with South Lanarkshire Council by Beechgrove Care Home, near Caldwellside on the edge of Lanark, to build accommodation for a further 61 residents.

The current building, constructed around a decade ago, is home to 70 mainly elderly residents.

This application comes hard on the heels of one to build an old folks home of a similar size on a vacant site near Cleghorn.

There is no timescale for the Beechgrove expansion but a spokeswoman for the home told the Gazette that it was likely that the extra accommodation would be in a separate building adjacent to the existing one on the Caldwellside site rather than an extension of the existing building.

She added that she hoped that the expansion would bring a solution to a long-running problem, that of the lack of a bus stop for relatives and friends of residents to use when visiting the home.
