Exploring Dunbartonshire's rich history at exhibition

The rich and colourful past of the area is being brought to life with a fascinating exhibition of East Dunbartonshire's 11 settlements through an eclectic selection of objects spanning the years.

The free exhibition opens in Kirkintilloch’s award-winning Auld Kirk Museum on Saturday June 18 at 11am and runs until 16 July.

It marks the culmination of a two year programme run by the East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Trust to involve local people in chronicling life in the area’s towns and villages through the ages.

The exhibition will feature a curated time line of objects from the Trust’s Museum and Archive Collections, from a Neolithic carved stone ball to a rather more modern Garvie’s Lemonade water jug.

And as well as objects from the collection, the exhibition will display photographs of people and artists who took part in the popular ‘Trails and Tales programme’ which caught the imagination of more than 14 communities at dozens of events and workshop activities over the past two years.

Councillor Anne Jarvis, Chair of the Trust, who will open the exhibition, paid tribute to everyone who had been a part of the ambitious programme over the last two years.

She said: “Our committed and enthusiastic team should be congratulated for the vision they have shown in running the programme and bringing this exhibition together. They hosted a series of very well attended events which brought local people together in halls and libraries in every corner of the area to record their memories of East Dunbartonshire over a cuppa.

“There was a great feeling of community spirit during the programme and what we have as a result is a truly interesting and inspiring exhibition.

“I’d like to thank everyone who contributed and urge anyone with a love of local history to go to the Auld Kirk museum over the four weeks and soak up everything it has to offer.”

There will also be access to the full online time-line of objects and an opportunity for visitors to contribute their own ideas and objects to a ‘community’ time line of local archives and treasures.
