Family fun on two wheels

FAMILIES embraced pedal power on Sunday as nearly 1,000 people turned up for the second Clarkston BID cycle day.

The Spring into Summer event – held at Clarkston Halls car park – was the latest from the Business Improvement District, aimed at getting East Ren residents on their bikes and shopping locally.

As well as trying out timber trails, vintage bike displays and kids activities, visitors clamoured to have their picture taken with a special guest, 2014 Commonwealth Games mascot Clyde – including seven-year-old Eva Hammett from Cathcart (pictured on a vintage penny farthing).

There were free rickshaw rides around Clarkston on offer, and human energy company Peachy Keen provided demonstrations alongside local business stalls.

BID chair Debra Clapham is delighted with the latest successful event – despite less than promising weather in the morning.

She told The Extra: “As we were setting up the marquee, we faced gale force winds and rain – but thankfully it cleared up, and in the end the main street was full of kids on bikes.

“It brought home the fact that many people are prepared to take up cycling, as lots of families cycled down to the event together.

“Clyde was very popular with the children (and the adults too), and lots of people signed up to our loyalty card scheme, so it’s clear the community are behind the work of the BID.”

The next BID event is planned for August, with another Christmas fair, in November, to follow. To find out more, visit www.iloveclarkston.com.
