Family fundraise for a boy’s best friend

Fraser has Down’s Syndrome and autism, and is unable to speak — making it difficult for him to communicate his needs.

Sensory difficulties also mean that the Newton Mearns youngster has problems with everyday activities like brushing his teeth or getting haircuts — which can lead to distressing situations when out and 
about.

With his 11th birthday coming up on May 28, mum Joanne hopes to raise enough money to provide Fraser with a specially-trained service dog — but the McAlpine family faces a cost of £6,000 to fund it.

Joanne told The Extra: “Service Dogs Europe provide and train dogs to help Fraser and other children with a similar 
diagnosis.

“The dog is trained to help each child with their individual needs, for example calming during meltdowns and keeping them 
safe.

“We hope that the dog will help Fraser develop independent living skills and help combat sensory difficulties.

“Helping Fraser realise his full potential would mean the world to our family, and raising the funds would be a fantastic birthday gift for him.”

The McAlpines have set up a fundraising page to help reach that £6,000 target, and have already raked in more than £250 from family and friends.

Commenting on the Lets Go Fundraise page, one supporter wrote: “Good luck Fraser, hope you get your buddy soon, you certainly deserve it!”

Another commented: “Hope Fraser gets the service dog he needs and that his life is enriched by the love, loyalty and friendship that the service dog will 
provide.”
