Karen Corrie will be walking the West Highland Way, joined by her three sons Calum (18), James (15) and Euan (9), to raise funds for research into Motor Neurone Disease after her husband Doug, died from the disease last summer aged just 57.

Karen said: “My husband was diagnosed with MND in 2016.

“He always said that when the boys were older he would like to walk the West Highland Way with them, as he had done it a few time in the past.

“However, because of his diagnosis he wasn’t able to do that. I told him that I would take the boys in his honour and raise funds for MND Scotland.

“This walk means a lot to me, not just to raise funds but to fulfill the promise that Doug made to the boys before all this happened, and my promise to him to do this for him.

“I am doing this in order to raise funds for research into this most terrible terminal disease with no cure and no effective treatment, which in this day and age is just not right.”

And how is training for the walk going?

“Well, we are quite fit, but we probably need to do more!” Karen said. “I walk the dog a good bit but I should do more.

“I’ve been told that it could take about five days to complete the West Highland Way, but it might take us a bit longer.

“I’m hoping to start out seven days before the anniversary of Dougie’s death. We aim to finish on July 28 which is the day he died.”

With 23 per cent of the £1,450 target reached so far, Karen is keen for more people to join them on the fundraising walk.

“It would be great if anyone wanted to join us for all or just part of the way. Even if they wanted to do it for a day.

“The more people who can join our team, the more we can reach and raise.”
