Farmers reflecting on record wet summer

As we approach the end of January farmers are reflecting on how dreadful last year was, confining it to the record books as one of the worst summers ever recorded and hoping that this year can only be better.

The recent frosty spell has given some pleasant working conditions albeit slightly cold; however it has allowed time to look round the steading, stock and land to assess the current conditions.

It is an all too common story that silage is going to be in tight supply and that many farmers are selling silage for a price which can not be sustained. Some farmers who have measured supplies and are now praying for an early spring to avoid buying extra feed, but is this a gamble worth taking?
