In the latest incident, a wall outside the sports centre was flattened  by a vehicle travelling  down the hill at speed on  Balmuildy Road.

It has now a been revealed that in 2011, a car crashed into a wall and landed on the bonnets of other vehicles in the sports centre car park before coming to a halt on its roof.

Local resident Gary Pews, who witnessed the accident four years ago, said: “It really was a miracle no one was killed.

“There were three young people in the car and one was seriously injured. The car somersaulted in the air and landed on top of parked cars, only just missing a family walking past.”

The road was closed for several hours after the crash.

Another concerned local resident added: “As someone who regularly walks my dogs along Balmuildy Road, it is frightening to watch the speed of drivers across the bridge, at the Leisuredrome.

“They take no notice about the slow down sign. The only thing to stop them is a £100 fine from a speed camera.”

Bishopbriggs Community Council raised the issue at their meeting last week. Members are demanding the council install more traffic calming measures.

Grace Irvine, director of neighbourhood services for East Dunbartonshire Council, said: “Road safety is a priority for us and we are always happy to listen to concerns and suggestions about how to make improvements.

“Speeding motorists should be reported to Police Scotland to investigate.”

A police spokesman said: “We are aware of the recent incidents and enquires are on going as to the circumstances and persons responsible.

“Influencing driver and other road users behaviour is key to improving road safety which is a major priority within East Dunbartonshire.

“Traffic management and speeding initiatives are carried out on a daily basis. Any complaints received from members of the public are incorporated within these initiatives and focus policing activity to specific areas and previous accident locations.”

A HORROR crash at a busy leisure centre could have been even worse, it has been warned.

A car crashed into the wall of Bishopbriggs Leisuredrome and landed on the bonnets of other cars before coming to a halt on its roof.

The driver and three passengers were all boys aged 17.

At the time of going to press, police said one of the passengers was in a serious but stable condition and another boy was in a stable condition.

The driver and another passenger were released after treatment for minor injuries.

A Bishopbriggs man who witnessed the crash said: “The car passed me seconds before it crashed.

“I looked in my mirror and saw it somersault and spin round and then it went through the wall at the car park to the sports centre.

“It landed on the bonnet of one car and then onto another one. It was horrific.

“The car just missed a family of four who were walking outside the sports centre. It was lucky no-one was in the other cars.

“I turned around and went back to help. People rushed out of the sports centre.

“Two people were trapped inside. Myself and three others managed to lift the door and get one of them out.”

The smash took place as the Vauxhall Corsa was going along Balmuildy Road on Saturday afternoon at around 1.30pm.

The road was closed for several hours after the crash. At the time of going to press, police said no-one had been charged in connection with the incident.
