Fears over lack of space at Wilton Road Cemetery

THERE are fears that people who want to be buried in Carluke will be forced to find their final resting place outwith the town – due to a lack of room.

The alarm was raised by a 74-year-old woman born and bred in the town who was unable to purchase a lair in Wilton Road Cemetery, which has been open for more than century.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said: “I called the council a couple of weeks ago to see if I could get a lair but was told that I was unable to get one because there were only four left.

“It’s very concerning as I have not heard anything from the council saying that they were going to extend the cemetery or build a new one.

“I’m sure that there are a lot more people like me who would like to find out what is happening.

“I think a lot of people will not even be aware just how full that cemetery is.”
