Festival makes a real splash

A week of boat trips culminated in Get Active Saturday and Gala Sunday (20-21 August).

The annual celebration of everything nautical and nice was another great success - entertaining thousands, as well as delivering a boost for the economy of Kirkintilloch and East Dunbartonshire.

Fun for all the family included a roller disco, live music, fireworks, canoeing, archery, climbing, food court, stone carving, arts and crafts, cycle rides and Nerf Adventures.

Other highlights included a classic car display, market stalls, street theatre, funfair and carousel, Coppers on the Canal, mini golf and more.

Gala Sunday fun took place around the Marina, Barleybank, the grassed area at Sainsbury’s and New College Lanarkshire’s Kirkintilloch Campus.

Kirkintilloch Baptist Church and the Auld Kirk Museum also hosted events.

East Dunbartonshire council leader Rhondda Geekie said: “I am delighted to say that Kirkintilloch Canal Festival was another great success - attracting thousands of people to East Dunbartonshire for a weekend to remember.

“There was an amazing range of activities, entertainment and attractions on offer throughout the festival.

“The weather was most certainly mixed, but that did not dampen any of the enthusiasm - particularly among the children and young at heart who got into the swing of things at the many different events.

“The festival remains an annual highlight for local residents and visitors from far and wide.

“I look forward to another great event in 2017.”
