Final push forward for Govanhill Baths

After 17 years of campaigning, the people of Govanhill are entering the final phase to redevelop their Edwardian bathhouse and swimming pools.

To do this, Govanhill Baths Community Trust is hoping to raise £300,000 from a Community Share issue, allowing people to invest in the future of The Baths.

First Minister of Scotland, and local MSP, Nicola Sturgeon launched the share issue at an event last week in the empty swimming pool in Calder Street.

This initiative is crucial to the future of the project.

Community Shares are a way for people to fund and run local projects together through the creation of a Community Benefit Society.

Shareholders will have a direct say in the running and the future of the project.

Although shares cannot be sold on they can be withdrawn at a later date along with three per cent interest per annum on your investment.

Most of the funding is in place to start the rebuild next year, but the final £300,000, from the community, is needed to reach the final goal and bring public swimming back to Govanhill.

Alan Walsh, chair of Govanhill Baths Community Trust said: “For many years Govanhill Baths Community Trust have been the custodians for this beloved building.

“We are now at an exciting moment in the Baths’ history where the people can now take them forward to a truly democratic future.”
