Campaigners were also out in force in Busby, Clarkston, Giffnock, Thornliebank and Netherlee.

East Renfrewshire councillor and campaigner Ian McAlpine believes “the momentum is now with No Thanks”.

He told The Extra: “This is great news and proves that people in Newton Mearns want to stay as part of the UK with increased powers for the Scottish Parliament.

“Months of campaigning will all be worthwhile if we remain part of the UK. We can have a fairer, more equitable, more socially just society but independence is not the way to do it. I hope people will vote No.”
