First minister black balls substandard housing

Residents, past and present, of a Glasgow housing estate joined first minister Nicola Sturgeon on Monday to countdown the demolition of problem deck access housing, which have been the subject of complaints for more than a decade.

The Pollokshields flats have been plagued for decades by dampness, poor sound and heat insulation, and security

problems.

The MSP for Glasgow South invited pupils from nearby schools to cheer on as she pressed the fateful button — and they joined her later in her signature photo ‘selfie’ mark the occasion.

Phase 1 of the demolition programme will affect 15 and 19 St Andrews Drive and 20 St Johns Quadrant, work be ing carried out by Dem-Masters Ltd over the next four months.

The demolition will mark the beginning of a £26m regeneration programme led by Southside Housing Association

The programme will see the 272 sub standard houses demolished in three phases over the next four years and replaced by 153 new energy efficient homes.

Resident Lisa Peebles said: “We have waited a long time for this day”.

Southside Housing Association chair Dorothy Murray added: “It is great to see the

demolition programme begin and we can’t wait to see work commence on the new homes.

“The Association has worked hard to re-house residents affected by the demolition programme and we

appreciate the patience and forbearance of the local community who have been so supportive of our efforts.

“Our thanks to all those who have worked so tirelessly to make this day a reality.”

Nicola Sturgeon said: “This is the culmination of a long campaign by local residents to improve their housing.

“I am very pleased to see Southside Housing Association leading the regeneration of the area and I know how much people are looking forward to seeing the work to build new houses start.”
