Now 60-year-old Mary Wilson, of 8 Merlindale, is bitter that they are holding her to a ‘contract’ she signed three years ago in which she promised she would not seek extra help from them if her state of health worsened.

“I don’t have a crystal ball; I didn’t know when I signed the mandate for my new tenancy that I’d get cancer,” she said.

A spokesman for Melville Housing Association told the Gazette they were “sympathetic” to Mary’s plight and would be “reviewing” the decision.
